Transfer Deadline Day
Transfer deadline day promises to be as busy as ever with a number of clubs still looking to improve their squad. Here we give you a club-by-club guide to the busiest day of transfers in football.
Mertesacker: Has completed medical at Arsenal.
Arsenal: What they need: A centre half, a left back, a central midfielder and a striker. Who they’ll get: Chu Young Park has completed his move from Monaco with Andre Santos set to follow. Per Mertesacker is having a medical. Who they won’t get: Gary Cahill has been linked all summer and could still sign, but moves for Kaka and Mario Goetze are mere speculation. Who’s leaving: Armand Traore signed for QPR on Tuesday, Nicklas Bendtner looks certain to follow him out the door.
Aston Villa: What they need: The defence lacks strength in depth and another striker wouldn’t go amiss. Who they’ll get: Alan Hutton looks set to complete a move from Spurs. Who they won’t get: Owen Hargreaves looks set to be heading to Manchester City. Who’s leaving: It’s unlikely that anyone will after Jonathan Hogg went on loan to Watford.
Blackburn Rovers: What they need: The defence and attack need serious strengthening. Who they’ll get: Scott Dann may be on his way from Birmingham. Who they won’t get: Much to the disappointment of Steve Kean, Venad Ibisevic’s move from Hoffenheim has fallen through and Yakubu has snubbed a move. Who’s leaving: Chris Samba may yet leave but Rovers will be desperate to keep hold of his star defender.
Bolton Wanderers: What they need: A replacement for Gary Cahill if he leaves. Who they’ll get: Scott Dann or Liam Ridgewell could arrive. Who they won’t get: Shaun Wright-Phillips looks more likely to go to QPR. Who’s leaving: Gary Cahill is likely to depart, with Spurs his most likely destination.
Chelsea: What they need: A central midfielder to cover for the injured Michael Essien. Who they’ll get: A cash plus player bid for Raul Meireles was rejected by Liverpool but they’re expected to come back with another bid. Who they won’t get: Everyone they wanted has signed already Who’s leaving: Yossi Benayoun is in talks with a number of different clubs but anyone else linked with moves away is expected to stay.
Everton: What they need: The fans would like to see anyone brought in. Who they’ll get: It’s been made clear to David Moyes that he needs to sell before he can buy Who they won’t get: Anyone! Unless they sell. Who’s leaving: Leighton Baines, Phil Jagielka, Yakubu or Jack Rodwell could all be moved on in order to raise funds.
Fulham: What they need: A striker and a centre half. Who they’ll get: Zdenek Grygera has joined from Juventus, Derek Boateng, from Dnipro, and Cameron Jerome may follow. Who they won’t get: Joe Cole has gone to Lille and Nikica Jelavic looks like he’s going to stay at Rangers. Who’s leaving: Martin Jol has stated he expects no departures.
Liverpool: What they need: Kenny Dalglish wants another striker to support Suarez and Carroll. Who they’ll get: Craig Bellamy looks most likely to be brought in if they can agree terms with club and player. Who they won’t get: Fernando Gago looks set to snub English interest in favour of a move to Roma. Who’s leaving: Raul Meireles could head for Chelsea, Joe Cole has joined Lille on loan and Christian Poulsen is also on his way out.
Manchester City: What they need: It’s hard to spot any area that needs strengthening. Who they’ll get: Owen Hargreaves looks likely to join in a shock move after his release from Manchester United. Who they won’t get: Garry Cook has said City are not going to spend again this summer. Who’s leaving: The City squad looks settled but Craig Bellamy, Wayne Bridge, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Nedum Onuoha all look set to depart.
Manchester United: What they need: The league leaders wrapped up their transfer business early on in the the summer and are happy with their squad. Who they’ll get: No one is likely to arrive. Who they won’t get: Wesley Sneijder has confirmed he’s staying at Inter for at least another year. Who’s leaving: No one from the first team squad, some younger players may go out on loan.
Newcastle United: What they need: A striker and a full back. Who they’ll get: Davide Santon has arrived from Inter and fellow Italian striker Federico Macheda could come in on loan from Manchester United, Rob Elliott should also arrive from Charlton before the deadline. Who they won’t get: Newcastle look set to be successful in recruiting all of their targets. Who’s leaving: Nile Ranger could be farmed out to Blackpool
Norwich City: What they need: Midfield reinforcements. Who they’ll get: No one is expected to come in. Who they won’t get: Irrelevant as they haven’t targeted late deals for anybody. Who’s leaving: Cody McDonald looks set to leave for Peterborough.
Queen’s Park Rangers: What they need: Strengthening all across the park. Who they’ll get: Neil Warnock has said he plans at least three more signings. Could get Anton Ferdinand, Peter Crouch and Shaun Wright-Phillips. Who they won’t get: Scott Parket is heading to Tottenham Who’s leaving: Nobody.
Stoke City: What they need: Tony Pulis may have wrapped up his final deal with the signature of Wilson Palacios. Who they’ll get: No one is expected following the signature of Palacios. Who they won’t get: Peter Crouch looks more likely to end up at Sunderland or QPR. Who’s leaving: Nobody.
Sunderland: What they need: Already brought in a number of players this summer but could move for another striker. Who they’ll get: Possibly Peter Crouch if an acceptable offer is made. Who they won’t get: Papiss Demba Cisse will probably be out of their price range. Who’s leaving: Anton Ferdinand has been linked with QPR.
Swansea: What they need: Another striker. Who they’ll get: Gerhard Tremmel has signed on a free transfer, Cameron Jerome may be of interest but other than that their transfer business looks to be complete. Who they won’t get: Liam Ridgwell’s transfer request at Birmingham was rejected so he won’t be going anywhere. Who’s leaving: Brendan Rodgers is content with his squad as it is.
Tottenham Hotspur: What they need: A right back, a midfielder or two and a striker. Who they’ll get: Scott Parker looks certain to sign and Gary Cahill is locked in talks. Historically they’re capable of anything on deadline day. Who they won’t get: The Lassana Diarra deal is dead in the water. Who’s leaving: Alan Hutton looks set to move to Villa, Wilson Palacios has completed a move to Stoke and Peter Crouch looks set to leave with a number of clubs swarming over.
West Bromwich Albion: What they need: Roy Hodgson may want to strengthen after his side’s nightmare start to the season. Who they’ll get: Scott Dann may of interest. Who they won’t get: Hodgson did have an interest in Owen Hargreaves but looks to have been gazumped by Manchester City. Who’s leaving: Jerome Thomas could be off to Fulham.
Wigan Athletic: What they need: Creativity in midfield and a striker. Who they’ll get: Albert Crusat has signed from Almeria, Shaun Maloney is in talks whilst Giovanni dos Santos is also an option. Who they won’t get: Vladimir Weiss has moved to Espanyol. Who’s leaving: With the squad as thin as it is, Roberto Martinez will be reluctant to let anyone go.
Wolverhampton Wanderers: What they need: Possibly another defender and/or midfielder to cover what they already have. Who they’ll get: They’re unlikely to sign anyone after their impressive start to the season but Jez Moxey has hinted at a possible loan signing. Who they won’t get: All business was achieved long ago so they won’t be too concerned if they don’t get anyone else. Who’s leaving: No one is likely to leave.
